Mindful Monday - Your Attention Please

Stacey Alcorn

Happy Monday.

Focus: An act of concentrating interest or activity on something.

Attention: Notice taken of someone or something. The action of dealing with or taking special care of someone or something

Distraction: Unable to concentrate for the mind is preoccupied.

Focus is so audacious as to make you believe that your success at achieving a goal is incumbent by its mere presence. What a false entitlement. The debt paid in the achievement of goals is the pinnacle, Attention. May I have your attention, please?

The 4 Myths of Attention:

Myth One - There Is Only One Type of Attention: There are many degrees and types of attention, typically all grouped together interchangeably under a singular act or action, commonly referred to as Attention. The four primary categories of attention include, but certainly are not limited to Selective, Divided, Sustained, and Executive. Selective Attention is singular concentration. Divided Attention is focusing on two or more activities at once. Sustained Attention, remaining concentrated for extended periods. Executive Attention is the mission-oriented completion of successive steps. It is Selective Attention, Sustained Attention, or Executive Attention, not focus that are essential. Initially, this may seem counterintuitive but it’s not. Constant allocation of the always locked-on, targeted Attention creates long-term and consistent effects while intermittent and oftentimes irregular Focus creates sporadic outcomes.

Myth 2 - Attention is Limitless: Multitasking is another word for divided. If one divides their attention, they must be prepared for the division of the results and consequences. Divided Attention or multitasking most often produces lesser results than Selective Attention, Sustained Attention, or Executive Attention. Studies have proven that multi-tasking hinders performance. Attention and abundance are critical co-factors in the achievement paradigm. This bountiful but limited human resource is a gift. Please use it wisely.

Myth 3 - Attention Pauses: Concentration is the control of attention. Distractedness is the loss or misguidance of attention control. Ironically, this is one of the greatest paradoxes. Pay close attention to what you are paying attention to so that you can stop paying so much attention to what you shouldn’t be paying attention to. It is the least known and single most counterproductive component in the achievement and success model. Distraction presents in all shapes and sizes with no discretion. This one demands constant Awareness. The achievement of success mandates the ability to recognize, curtail, and eliminate distractions. Awake, at rest, asleep, attention remains active in both the conscious and subconscious mind. Carefully monitoring and managing attention allocation is how wishes are achieved.

Myth 4 - Attention is Latent: Attention is so much more than the mere direction of one’s thoughts. Attention is an energy antenna. It is the center where energy is captured, broadcast, and received. What YOU think about is what YOU bring about. Today is a manifestation of past attentions and intentions and tomorrow is shaped by today’s attentions and intentions. Through your attention, that energy will be transmitted out into the universe. Attention and intent are the vehicles through which life manifests.

You shall be known by your attention and intention.
