LAER Gratitude List - Day 3

Stacey Alcorn

If you have ever had the opportunity to visit LAER Leominster, then surely you've been greeted by Duke. He's always lounging around the office, happy to lend a hand to his peers. His mom and dad are Kim and Peter McDonald, and since they never travel far without Duke, he's pretty much part of the office every day. To the agents and staff of LAER Leominster, Duke is part of the fam.

Today I dedicate our Gratitude Blog to Duke and the five simple lessons he's taught me about life, real estate, and success.

Subtly Form Friendships: Whether you are a long time agent of the office or a first time visitor, Duke is equally excited to see you when you stop by. He will mosey out of his office when he hears the front door open, and if at first you don't see him, he'll eventually sidle up and nudge your leg. Duke is a quiet, laid back, kind of dog. He doesn't jump or bark. But, he subtly has his own way of forming friendships, so much so, that visitors quickly notice if Duke's not around when they come in. What I've learned from Duke is that friendships don't have to be all pomp and circumstance. Good friends are often made by quiet, ongoing, rendezvous with those whom you simply like to hang with.

Don't Worry, Be Happy: Recently, Duke was diagnosed with cancer. You wouldn't know it by looking at him. His routine hasn't changed much. He still hangs at the office and looks forward to his walks with his grandma (who lives upstairs). Rather than focus on the things he can't fix, Duke focuses on getting the most enjoyment out of today. Occasionally when I know I have a stressful week coming up, instead of freaking out in advance, I do what Duke would do.... I let go of the worry in favor of enjoying the here and now.

Stay Calm: With the courthouse being across the street from our Leominster office, its not unusual for there to be a buzz of energy from the media frenzies that occasionally happen outside. On more than one occasion, the skies above the office have been littered with media helicopters and hype within the office becomes an all time hight. But not for Duke. Duke is always even keel.  Nothing knocks him off his game. He's a constant reminder to never sweat the small stuff.

One Big Team: Above is a picture of a teddy bear drive that the Leominster agents put together in 2015. If you look closely, you'll see Duke in the picture. Duke has taught me, and everyone in the office, that everyone is an important part of the team. He can't talk, he doesn't close real estate deals, and Duke can't offer advise as to the value of a home, but that doesn't mean Duke isn't a valuable member of the team. Duke has taught me that everyone has something to contribute to the greater good of our community and so all are equal members of the team.

Be a Sounding Board: One of the coolest things about Duke is that he is privy to everything that goes on at LAER Leominster. He has heard it all, and as such, he is a calm sounding board for the agents of the office. When someone has a tough deal, Duke is happy to lend his curly locks for a nice scratch and cuddle, because everyone feels a little better after patting a furry friend. Duke has taught me to remember that one of the greatest gives we can give to others is to simply sit and listen.
